It started with a T.J. Thomas buzzer beater while sitting down to beat Cumberland County in the first round. That was followed by a fourth quarter rally to upend defending region champs Franklin-Simpson. But there was nothing fancy about Barren County's victory over Warren East in the 4th Region Final. They just won, convincingly.
For Barren County to even reach the region final is impressive enough. After falling in the 15th District Championship to Glasgow, the Trojanettes would go on to beat three district champions to reach the Sweet 16.
The Trojanettes opened up a 10-point first quarter lead and never looked back en route to their first region title since 2004. T.J. Thomas led the way with 17 points and five assists. Fellow senior Bethany Spillman just missed out on the double-double, recording ten points and nine rebounds.
Warren East was led by sophomore Ashley Rainey, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 turnovers. With a banged up backcourt, the Lady Raiders struggled to keep possession of the ball, committing 31 turnovers.
The Lady Raiders finish the season 24-7, while Barren County advances to the Houchens/KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 at E.A. Diddle Arena where they face 3rd Region champions Muhlenberg North on Wednesday, March 14th at 6:30.
