Tubby Smith is leaving the Bluegrass heading to the University of Minnesota.
There has been a lot of breaking news on this story, in fact the AP reported Minnesota did not even get permission to contact Tubby about its job until this morning, Thursday, March 22, 2007.
The coach left for Minnesota this afternoon, but the decision didn’t take very long for Smith to make. He met with his players at about 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, then met Minnesota athletic director, Joel Maturi, at the Bluegrass Airport.
Tubby spent very little time at the airport before boarding a plane with Maturi for Minneapolis.
He’s expected to be named Gophers coach at noon Friday, March 23, 2007.
We told you at five, Tubby might make $1.8 million a season, but some reports have that figure at $2.5 million a season.
The name most frequently mentioned to replace Smith is former WKU assistant and current Marquette coach Tom Crean.
