Bowling Green, Ky. — Western Kentucky University head basketball coach Darrin Horn announced Thursday that Daniel Emerson will be released from his scholarship at the end of the spring semester and will attend Mercer.

“Western Kentucky University is a great school, I’ve had a tremendous experience here,” said the 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward. “However, it is best for my basketball future at this time to return closer to home and finish my career at Mercer. I am grateful to coach Horn and his staff for their loyalty to me during my time at WKU.”

Emerson started 24 of the Hilltoppers’ first 28 contests while making 31 total appearances in 2006-07, averaging 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per outing. The Norcross, Ga., resident reached double digits in the scoring column on four occasions last season — including accomplishing the feat in each of WKU’s first two games — and he led the Toppers in rebounding five times. Emerson shot 46.8 percent overall, making 7-of-19 from beyond the three-point arc, and 70.1 percent at the free-throw line, adding 19 assists and nine steals.

As a freshman, Emerson averaged 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in 29 appearances.

“After meeting with Daniel, I understood that he was interested in finding a system he thought he fit better in,” Horn said. “I am always interested in what’s best for each individual in the program. We appreciate the work and effort he has put forth the last two years, and wish him the best as he moves on.”

The Hilltoppers will return their top five scorers from last season, and 11 individuals total, from a team that went 22-11 overall while posting a 12-6 mark in Sun Belt Conference action and earning a first-round bye at the league tournament — WKU’s non-conference RPI rating is currently 46th in the nation entering the Final Four in Atlanta this weekend.
