Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University softball team scored five runs in the sixth inning to tie the score at seven, but allowed North Texas to score two runs in the top of the 10th frame to drop a Sun Belt Conference match up, 9-7, at the WKU Softball Complex.
WKU fell to 25-24 overall and 8-7 in SBC play while the Mean Green improved to 18-31 and 10-11 in conference action.
Down 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth, WKU sent 10 batters to the plate. A Terri Ellingsworth single to right scored Lindsay Antone and Shelby Smith to cut the gap to three runs. Renikka Toliver then singled to left field, scoring Ashley Contreras. After an NT pitching change, Rachelle Boucher singled to score Ellingsworth to close North Texas' lead to one. Boucher later tied the game when she reached home due to the left fielder's error.
Both teams where held scoreless over the next three innings, but Taylor Johnston hit a game-winning double to left-center to break the tie in the 10th. Sarah Jones came around from second to score and then the Mean Green added another run in the frame on a Katya Muller single to right field, scoring Johnston.
North Texas jumped on the scoreboard early after Susan Waters hit a two-run home run in both the first and third innings. Waters now has 14 homers on the season. Then Christen Jonse singled home Kristina Fowler to put the Mean Green ahead 5-0 after three.
The Hilltoppers added two runs in the fourth inning when Rebecca Horesky scored on the center fielders' arrant throw. Ellingsworth added her first RBI of the day with a single to center to score Kelsey McCauley, who was running for Smith, to cut the lead to 5-2.
Fowler (5-12) earned the win, pitching 8.2 innings, giving up seven hits and no earned runs. Waters finished the game 2-for-6, with two homers, two runs, and four RBI.
Ryan Rogge (9-10) took the loss for WKU, in 6.1 innings of work, giving up seven hits and one earned run. Ellingsworth finished the day going 2-for-5 from the plate, scoring once, and adding three RBI.
The Hilltoppers return to conference action with a weekday series against Florida Atlantic at the WKU Softball Complex. A doubleheader is scheduled for Wednesday (April 25) at 3 p.m. (CDT) with a single game to follow on Thursday at 3 p.m.
