LEXINGTON, Ky. – Linebacker Sam Maxwell was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Kentucky's 34-27 win at Georgia, the league office announced Monday.

Maxwell (Hartwell, Ga.) led the Wildcat defense with a career-high 11 tackles, including one for loss.

In the final three minutes of the game Maxwell made two game-saving plays for the Wildcats. With Georgia driving for the potential tying touchdown, he stopped Bulldog tailback Caleb King at the one-yard line. On the next play, Kentucky recovered a Georgia fumble. After a Kentucky punt, Maxwell made the game-clinching interception with 1:45 remaining in the game.

Maxwell's tackle for loss on a third-down play in the first quarter kept Georgia out of the end zone and forced a Bulldog field-goal attempt.

Maxwell is the third Wildcat this season to garner SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Cornerback Trevard Lindley was named for the Miami game and linebacker Micah Johnson was chosen for the Auburn game.

Maxwell also earned a “helmet sticker” from ESPN.com for his efforts.
