Nashville, Tenn. — Brent Long, a junior on the Western Kentucky University men’s golf team, is tied for the lead at the Tennessee SunTrust State Open Championship after the first day of competition. He carded a 4-under-par 67 Tuesday at the par-71, 6,800-yard Gaylord Springs Golf Links, matching Justin Metzger — a professional — and Derek Rende.
Long’s round was keyed by a pair of eagles on the par-5, 529-yard opening hole and No. 13, which is a 317-yard par four. He was the only player in the field of 76 to record multiple eagles.
The Carthage, Tenn., native also recorded birdies on the sixth, ninth and 11th holes, while making 10 pars.
Nineteen golfers shot an even-par-71 or better, including two who stand one behind the leaders.
Second-round play at the event begins at 7:30 p.m. (CDT), with Long scheduled to tee off at 1:20 p.m. The tournament concludes with Thursday’s final round.
