Greenwood softball entered this weekend's state tournament as the number one team in the state. The Lady Gators would live up to their ranking, capturing the state title with a victory over the defending state champions, the Lady Raiders from Ryle.
The day started with a tight 2-1 victory over North Laurel to improve to 3-0 for the tournament. Greenwood followed up that effort with a 4-0 win against Scott County. The victory advanced the Lady Gators to the state final.
By defeating Scott County 4-2, Ryle moved on to face Greenwood, pitting the top two teams in the state against one another for the championship.
Greenwood junior pitcher Rachel Riley was dominant on the mound the entire weekend, pitching every game for the Lady Gators. Her efforts were rewarded with a state title and the Most Valuable Player award. As a team, Greenwood allowed only three runs for the entire tournament.
Greenwood ends the season with a final record of 40-5.
