Bowling Green, Ky. — Western Kentucky University will play host to East Tennessee State in the opening round of the 2007 Preseason WNIT, it was announced Wednesday.
The contest will take place at E.A. Diddle Arena on Friday, Nov. 9, with the time still to be determined. The Lady Bucs finished 20-12 a year ago while participating in the WNIT.
It’s the first time the Lady Toppers will take part in the event since the 2003 season, when they split a pair of games with Rhode Island and Texas Tech. WKU also was in the 1997 Preseason WNIT field, defeating Louisville and New Mexico en route to a third-place finish.
The winner of the WKU-ETSU game will face the winner of the contest between Notre Dame and Miami (Ohio). Delaware, Delaware State, Maryland and Princeton are the other four teams in the Lady Toppers’ half of the bracket, while Evansville, IUPUI, LSU, Marshall, Michigan State, Radford, Samford and Texas Christian round out the field. Second-round games will take place from Nov. 11-13, with the semifinals scheduled for either Nov. 14 or 15 and the championship match-up on Nov. 18.
With the tournament featuring a new format, all participants will be guaranteed three games with consolation bracket play.
The Lady Tops reached the semifinals of the WNIT last season, posting a 23-9 overall record. WKU will return six letterwinners from last year’s squad, led by honorable mention All-America selection Crystal Kelly.
