Bowling Green, Ky. — Western Kentucky University baseball coach Chris Finwood announced on Thursday that a pair of teammates from St. Petersburg (Fla.) College have signed National Letters of Intent, and will join the Hilltoppers in the fall. The signing of pitcher Mike Harley and infielder Gus Fernandez brings the 2007 recruiting class to 12.
Both Harley and Fernandez helped lead St. Petersburg to a Suncoast Conference co-championship in 2007 as the Wave finished 17-8 in the league. Both were also named to the 2007 Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA) all-conference team and the FCCAA all-tournament squad.
Harley appeared in 14 games in 2007, finishing with a 3.78 ERA as he struck out 59 batters in 66.2 innings. He earned a first-team all-conference selection for his efforts on the mound, and earned his spot on the all-tournament team after pitching a two-hit, complete-game shutout over Miami Dade CC in the second game of the event.
“Mike had an outstanding year for St. Petersburg College last year, and will give us an experienced arm to go along with our stable of talented young pitchers,“ said Finwood. “His complete-game shutout against Miami Dade was a great way to top off his JuCo career, and we are excited about adding him to our pitching staff.”
Fernandez was a second-team all-FCCAA pick after a sophomore season that saw him hit .348 with eight doubles, two home runs and 34 RBI. The middle infielder appeared in 52 games, finishing with 18 multi-hit contests. He tallied 57 total hits on the year and scored 52 runs for the Wave.
“Gus will be a great addition to the top of our lineup next year,“ said Finwood. “He has great spirit and enthusiasm, and will be a leader for us on the field as well.”
Harley and Fernandez join infielder Chad Cregar from Northwest Mississippi CC as the only junior college transfers in the recruiting class. The other nine signees — five pitchers, two infielders, an outfielder and a catcher — will all be freshmen on the 2008 squad.
