PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- In a record they'd rather not hold, the Philadelphia Phillies are the first US pro sports franchise with ten-thousand defeats.
The World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals delivered the milestone defeat 10-2 in a game they led 10-0 before the Phillies rallied with two in the bottom of the ninth. At the end, many fans at Citizens Bank Park were on their feet in a salute to their team.
This was a game they had seen before. The Phils had bad starting pitching, brutal relief and hardly any hitting.
Cards slugger Albert Pujols hit two of the Cardinals' six homers. Phillies starter Adam Eaton was hit hard, giving up six runs on ten hits in four innings to fall to 8-6. Adam Wainwright, the Cards starter, pitched seven shutout innings for the win. He's 8-7.
The Phillies were founded 125 years ago and have won just one World Series, in 1980.
For the record, their franchise record is now 8,810 wins and 10,000 losses.
