NEW ORLEANS, La. - Facing another two-out, ninth-inning deficit, the second such situation in two games and third time this week, WKU again found a big hit to tie the game and force extra-innings, eventually beating New Orleans, 13-7, in 10 innings. The win completes the weekend series sweep, moving the Hilltoppers' record to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference. New Orleans is 3-9 and 0-3 in the league. The conference series sweep on the road was WKU's first since winning three games at UALR May 14-16, 2004. WKU also won its first series at New Orleans since 2003.
For the second-straight game and third time this week, Kes Carter came up big in a game that the Hilltoppers trailed with two outs in their last at-bat. On Sunday, Carter singled on a two-strike pitch with two outs to score the tying run in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7. That followed a ninth-inning, two-strike, two-out home run on Saturday to start a three-run WKU rally to win, and came on the heels of ninth-inning, two-out RBI double against Tennessee on Tuesday that cut the Volunteer lead to one in a game that WKU came back to win. Carter finished the game 3-for-6 at the plate with 2 RBI and was 11-for-24 with (.458) in five games this week.
After tying the game in the ninth and forcing extra-innings, WKU went on to score six runs in the top of the 10th to put the game out of reach. Matt Borgschulte tripled to left-center to lead off the inning, and Casey Dykes followed with a two-run home run. The next four Hilltoppers reached and scored, and WKU lead 13-7 after nine-and-a-half innings. Tyler Gilliland entered the game and shut down the Privateers to clinch the weekend series sweep, giving up only one hit.
Jake Wells was 2-for-5 with two runs and a grand slam, accounting for the WKU runs in the sixth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. Matt Rice drove in three runs, and Blake Crabtree was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Shane Cameron worked six innings of three-run baseball in the start, allowing seven hits and striking out five. He did not factor into the decision, as Rye Davis picked up the win with two innings of relief work. Andrew Richardson took the loss for the Privateers.
WKU has now recorded seven comeback wins on the season, with three of them coming in the ninth inning of games this week.
Up Next: WKU is set for a home-and-home series against nationally-ranked Vanderbilt, facing the Commodores in Nashville on Tuesday and then returning to Nick Denes Field for another showdown with Vanderbilt on Wednesday.
