Vanderbilt's Nine-Run First Too Much to Overcome; WKU Falls, 17-6

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — One day after WKU routed the 18th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 17-2, in Nashville, Tenn., the roles were reversed at Nick Denes Field Wednesday afternoon as Vanderbilt rolled to a 17-6 win. The Commodores scored nine runs in the first inning and were ahead 14-2 after two-and-a-half. WKU is now 13-5 on the season, and Vanderbilt moves to 15-2.

Five Hilltoppers had a pair of hits, and Kes Carter hit his fifth home run of the season. Monte Ketchum reached base in all five plate appearances, drawing three walks and hitting a double and a single. Scott Pedersen, the third WKU pitcher of the night, worked two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings and did not allow a hit.

Matt Payton extended his career-long hitting streak to 16 games with a first-inning single.

Vanderbilt was paced by three hits apiece by Bryan Johns, Aaron Westlake and Jason Esposito. Westlake also drove in four runs.
