Bowling Green, Ky. — The Western Kentucky University men’s basketball team will face Gonzaga, which has appeared in nine straight NCAA Tournaments, to open up play in the 2007 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout it was announced Friday.
The contest, which will be televised nationally on ESPNU, will tip off at 10:30 p.m. (Central) on Thursday, Nov. 22 — it is the last of four quarterfinals games. Texas Tech and host Alaska Anchorage will meet in the first game that night, with the winners playing in the semifinals Friday at 11 p.m. and the losers meeting in a consolation semifinal match-up at 5 p.m.
The other four teams in the event are Butler, Eastern Washington, Michigan and Virginia Tech. There will be four contests on the final day of the tournament as well, with the championship game scheduled to be televised on ESPN2 at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
All games in the 30th annual Shootout will be held at Sullivan Arena.
The Hilltoppers return 11 letterwinners, including four starters, from a squad that finished 22-11 in 2006-07 and earned a first-round bye at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. WKU has won more than 20 games in each of the last three seasons, twice qualifying for the National Invitation Tournament.
The Zags went 23-11 a year ago, advancing to the NCAA Tournament after winning their seventh consecutive West Coast Conference regular-season title. They return eight letterwinners overall, including three starters.
