East Lansing, Mich. — In the span of one minute and eight seconds the Western Kentucky University men’s soccer team saw a tie match change to a two goal deficit against Michigan State at the Radisson Fall Classic. The Spartans defeated the Hilltoppers 2-0 at Old College Field on Sunday afternoon.
WKU moved to 0-2 on the season after the match as MSU stay undefeated at 2-0.
After the two teams traded three shots apiece in the first half, it didn't take Michigan State long to get going in the last 45 minutes of the match. In the 52nd minute, Zac Scaffidi sent a shot at goalie Pat Rickman in which he was able to save, however, Doug DeMartin cleaned up the rebound with his second goal of the season.
Just over a minute later, Kevin Reiman sent a ball to Scaffidi in the center of the field for MSU’s second goal of the afternoon.
Scaffidi and DeMartin each took three shots on the afternoon with four of the six shots coming on goal.
Rickman made three saves in the goal area as Glen Marshall took two shots for the Hilltoppers.
WKU will take the week off before hosting the first of two tournaments starting Friday night against Butler at 7 p.m. (CDT) at the WKU Soccer Complex.
