After one series against Florida, WKU had reason for optimism - it had driven effortlessly to the Gators' 10-yard-line after taking the opening kickoff.
But starting quarterback David Wolke's optimism was tempered somewhat - he didn't know where he was.
Wolke suffered a concussion (believed to have happened on the Hilltoppers' second offensive play) and missed the rest of the afternoon.
Initially, Wolke didn't realize he was hurt. Third-string quarterback Brandon Smith began asking Wolke about WKU's first series and when Wolke couldn't recall plays on the drive, Smith alerted trainers to Wolke's condition.
Wolke's fine now - he's been back at practice this week for the Hilltoppers and is expected to play Saturday against West Virginia Tech.
WKU's 2007 home opener marks the third time in five seasons the Hilltoppers have played the Golden Bears - WKU won 67-3 in 2003 and 63-3 in 2005.
In addition, WKU's sold better than 8,000 season tickets for the 2007 season - more than 6,000 tickets above WKU's previous single-season best.
