Towson, Md. — The Western Kentucky University volleyball team opened play at the 2007 Towson Invitational with a 3-0 loss (26-30, 22-30, 21-30) to #21 Dayton Friday afternoon.
The loss dropped WKU to 8-3 on the season, while the Flyers remained unbeaten on the year at 11-0.
The Lady Toppers hit just .171 as a team for the match as opposed to a .319 team hitting percentage for UD. Aquila Orr paced WKU will 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage, with Kelly Hofmeyer added a match-high 16 digs to lead the defense.
WKU held an 18-15 lead midway through game one, but saw the Flyers score three unanswered to tie the game. After swapping points, the teams were tied again at 22-22 before Dayton scored on a pair of Lady Topper errors to pull out to a two-point advantage. The Flyers never relinquished that lead as they went on to the four-point win the opening game.
The Lady Toppers were limited to just nine kills in game two as Dayton stormed out to an early 10-3 lead, and took a double-digit lead when a Chelsy Christoff service ace made it 22-12. WKU would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as it saw UD take a two-game lead, and carry the momentum into the third game.
Again the Flyers were able to jump out to an early lead, taking a 14-8 advantage early on. Once again that deficit was too much for the Lady Toppers to overcome as Dayton hit a match-best .353 in the third game and closed out the match with a nine-point victory.
Jamie-Lee Richards paced Dayton with 16 kills, while Bethany Akerhielm added 11. Kortney Norris and Erin Schroeder each collected 12 digs for the Flyers.
WKU will close out its final regular-season tournament of the year on Saturday (Sept. 15) with two more matches at Towson. The Lady Toppers will take on the host Tigers in the first match of the day at 9 a.m. (CDT), then finish out the weekend with a 2 p.m. meeting with Maryland-Baltimore County.
