Troy, Ala. — The Western Kentucky University volleyball team opened its 2007 Sun Belt Conference portion of the schedule with a 3-0 sweep (30-17, 30-25, 30-23) of Troy Friday evening at Trojan Arena.

The win was the fourth straight for WKU as it improved to 12-3 on the year and 1-0 in Sun Belt play. Troy fell to 9-7 and 0-1 in the league. The Lady Toppers will finish out their weekend conference roadtrip with a 2 p.m. (CDT) match on Saturday at South Alabama.

Three Lady Toppers finished with double-digit kills as Megan Argabright posted a match-best 15 kills, while Jenna Gideon and Aquila Orr added 10 kills each. The trio accounted for 35 of WKU‘s 51 kills on the night. Gideon also finished the night with a season-best .643 hitting percentage.

WKU was able to jump out to an early 10-6 lead in game one following a Lindsey Gould service ace, then built the lead to 19-10 following a Troy service error. The Lady Toppers rode a match-best .484 team hitting percentage to a win in the opening game as they closed the game on a 7-2 run for the 30-17 victory.

Both teams hit over .400 in game two, and WKU found itself trailing 11-6 early on following a Megan Henderson kill. The Lady Toppers pulled back even on two occasions, but were unable to regain the lead until a Julia Noe kill made it 18-17 WKU. Aubre Smith pulled the Trojans back even at 19-19, but a Brittany Bowen kill sparked a 6-1 Lady Topper run as they were able to open up a 25-20 lead. The lead grew as high as six, but Troy was able to pull back within three when an ace by Henderson made it 27-24. However, Gideon put down a kill that sparked a 3-1 Lady Topper run to close out the game.

WKU limited Troy to just five kills and a -.045 hitting percentage as it was able to storm out to an early 13-6 lead. After a Kerry Heinz kill cut the Lady Topper lead to 14-11, WKU used an 11-4 run to stretch the advantage to double figures at 25-15. After trading points, the Lady Toppers held a 28-18 lead after a block by Argabright. However, the Trojans stayed alive with five straight points before an Argabright kill and a Trojan attack error brought an end to the match.

With the victory over Troy, WKU has now won 12 straight Sun Belt Conference openers, and has won its first league match in 15 of the 16 seasons in which there has been a regular-season conference schedule. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
