Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University cross country runner Joseph Chebet was named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Runner of the Week for the second time this season on Wednesday afternoon. Chebet’s honor marks the sixth individual conference award this week for WKU Athletics, the most in program history since at least 2000.
Chebet earned his second award by winning Saturday’s Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn. The senior finished the 8,000-meter race in 24:36.15 and beat out 198 competitors representing 23 other schools, including two nationally ranked teams (Eastern Kentucky and Georgia) and seven Southeastern Conference schools. With the win Chebet became the first Hilltopper runner since at least 2004 to win a meet outside of WKU’s home course Kereiakes Park.
Chebet joins WKU football players Antonio Andrews, Jonathan Dowling and Hendrix Brakefield, as well as volleyball players Jordyn Skinner and Ashley Potts as Sun Belt Conference honorees this week.
In two races this season, both at Percy Warner Park, Chebet has crossed the crossed the line at first and runner-up, respectively. He was named Sun Belt Conference Runner of the Week on Sept. 5 for his second-place finish at the Belmont Opener.
Chebet and the Hilltoppers are back in action next Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Greater Louisville Classic, ran at Tom Sawyer Park.
