BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU senior defensive back Jonathan Dowling has been named to the watch list for the Jim Thrope Award, presented annually to the nation’s top defensive back by the Jim Thorpe Association.
The Jim Thorpe Award is one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
Dowling is one of two players from the Sun Belt Conference on the list.
It is the sixth such watch list honor for a WKU player this season and first for Dowling. Junior linebacker Andrew Jackson was previously named to the Bronko Nagurski Award and Bednarik Award watch lists while senior running back Antonio Andrews has made the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award and Maxwell Award. Senior center Sean Conway is a watch list selection for the Rimington Trophy.
