Bowling Green, Ky. — For their efforts in Western Kentucky University’s contest at #1 Alabama last Saturday, senior tight end Jack Doyle and senior defensive end Quanterus Smith both picked up honorable mention Performer-of-the-Week honors at their respective positions from the College Football Performance Awards.

Doyle — a preseason candidate for the John Mackey Award for the second straight year — led WKU in receptions for the fifth straight game dating back to 2011. The Indianapolis, Ind., native hauled in seven catches for 45 yards against the Crimson Tide. Through two games he leads the Hilltoppers with 12 catches for 121 yards — an average of 10.1 yards per catch and 60.5 yards per game.

After missing week one, Smith returned to the Hilltopper lineup against Alabama, and immediately made an impact against one of the top offensive lines in the country. The Loganville, Ga., product finished with a career-high three sacks for a total of 27 yards, and was also credited with a forced fumble on one of those quarterback stops. Smith’s efforts were part of a defensive performance that registered six total sacks, and eight tackles for loss. Last season, Smith finished the year ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference with 7.5 sacks on the year, and has already put up nearly half of that total already in 2012.

The Hilltoppers (1-1) hit the road to take on a second straight Southeastern Conference opponent this Saturday as they travel to Lexington to battle Kentucky. Kickoff from Commonwealth Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m (CDT), and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
