Bowling Green, KY – The Bowling Green Hot Rods (76-54, 38-24) used a three-hit night from Ryan Dunn and Justin O’Conner’s team-leading 13th home run of the season to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps (68-62, 25-36) 7-0 on Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Stone Speer also hurled four shutout innings in relief to earn the win, sending the Hot Rods to their ninth win in their last 11 contests.
Bowling Green took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on the first of four TinCap errors on the night. Mallex Smith dropped an Oscar Hernandez fly ball to left-centerfield that allowed Dunn to score from first base. Starter Blake Snell then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third inning.
The middle-third of the contest saw the Hot Rods storm ahead and take complete control of the game. O’Conner’s long drive was a solo shot that occurred with one out in the fourth inning. The Hot Rods then plated three in the fifth inning on a Tyler Goeddel two-out RBI single and a Fort Wayne error that allowed two runs to score. In the sixth inning, two more TinCap mishaps brought in two more Hot Rods tallies.
Snell lasted just three innings with four walks and six strikeouts elevating his pitch count. Speer took over and continued the shutout, blanking the TinCaps through four frames. Matt Spann pitched the final two scoreless innings, clinching the Hot Rods sixth home shutout of the season and 15th overall of the season.
