Bowling Green, KY – Matt Spann’s solid debut in the starter’s role and two RBI performances from Justin O’Conner and Tyler Goeddel sent the Bowling Green Hot Rods (12-6, 50-36) to a 7-1 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (2-15, 34-52) on Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Hot Rods win is the tenth consecutive over the Lugnuts at home, a stretch that dates back to 2012.

Bowling Green hitters had to take a little punishment to create their first rally situation on Sunday. Leonardo Reginatto drew a one-out hit-by-pitch, which was later followed by Joey Rickard drawing his team-leading twelfth hit-by-pitch with two outs. Ryan Dunn then snuck a 3-2 single down the left field line to plate the first Hot Rods run.
Lansing answered back to tie the score with a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Hot Rods provided themselves some breathing room with another two-out rally in the fifth. Rickard and Dunn both drew walks to begin the inning, but the next two Hot Rods were set down on strikes. Again with two strikes and two outs, O’Conner lifted a soft line drive into centerfield to give the Hot Rods 2-1 lead.

Goeddel then widened the gap with a two-RBI single up the middle.
The very next inning, the Hot Rods exploded for another three-run rally, using RBI from Brandon Martin and O’Conner and a Lansing error. The six-run cushion was enough for Hot Rods pitchers Spann, the debut of Stone Speer, and Nick Sawyer. In his first career Hot Rods start, Spann allowed just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings to earn the win. Speer, the first 2013 draft pick to reach Bowling Green, retired five of the six batters that he faced in his first Hot Rods action.
The quick, three-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark against Lansing comes to a close on Monday afternoon at 12:05 PM. The Hot Rods will give LHP Sean Bierman (5-3, 2.07) the start. Lansing has not named a starter for Monday’s game.

Hank Fuerst and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the contest, starting with the Forever Communications Pregame Show at 4:35 PM CDT on the Hot Rods Radio Network (1340 “The Ticket” WBGN-AM and 1340wbgn.com).
