BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU baseball team will look to rekindle some tournament magic as it heads to Lafayette, La., for the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament. The last time the tournament was held in Lafayette came back in 2008, as WKU went 4-1, winning the tournament title and earned a bid to the Stillwater Regional.
That year the Hilltoppers entered the tournament with a 29-24 record and a 16-14 record in Sun Belt play. Those numbers are eerily similar to 2013, as WKU enters the tournament with a 28-27 overall record, and an identical 16-14 mark in league play.
This year WKU will enter as the fifth seed after finishing the regular season winners of four in a row, including a sweep of rival Middle Tennessee on the road to secure the fifth seed. The Hilltoppers will take on a familiar foe in the opener, as WKU will take on fourth-seeded Florida Atlantic at 9:00 AM (CT) on Wednesday.
The meeting between the Hiilltoppers and the Owls in the opener will mark the fifth time in the last six years that the two teams have met in the tournament opener, and is the eighth time in the last seven years that the two have met in the conference tournament.
WKU has won at least one game in the conference tournament in four out of the last five years, and has won a pair of tournament titles since 2004. The winner of Wednesday’s game will take on the winner of top-seed Troy and eighth-seeded Arkansas State on Thursday.
