BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The WKU volleyball team (2-2) continues to go full steam ahead in its 2014 season, as the Lady Toppers will play four games in two days at the University Plaza/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Springfield, Mo.
The squad opens the tournament with Incarnate Word (1-2) on Friday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. CT before concluding the day with host Missouri State (1-2) at 7 p.m. CT. Saturday will consists of an early match against Wisconsin-Milwaukee (3-0) at 10:30 a.m. CT while finishing with Oral Roberts (2-1) at 2:30 p.m. CT.
All games will have gametracker available through Missouri State’s website, MissouriStateBears.com, while the match against the Bears will be available for online viewing with subscription at the athletics site as well. Updates will also come via Twitter with @WKUVolleyball.
After grabbing a sweep against Belmont on Tuesday, WKU looks to carry that momentum and lessen the learning curve in this young season.
“What I’m looking for is just experience,” WKU head coach Travis Hudson said. “We need to play matches. We can beat anybody, and we can lose to anybody. That’s just where we are right now.
“We need consistency out of our upperclassmen. The Heather Boyans and Haley Bodways—the players that can go out and do it every night need to go out and do it every night. Hopefully we can learn these lessons and move forward. It will come with time. I’m probably the most impatient one of the bunch.”

back on the road
The WKU volleyball team is back on the road after notching a sweep in its home opener Tuesday night, as the squad travels to Springfield, Mo., for the University Plaza/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational this weekend. The Lady Toppers take on Incarnate Word and host Missouri State on Friday before facing Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Oral Roberts on Saturday.
last time out
The Lady Toppers slid past Belmont on Tuesday night in the team’s home opener, sweeping the Bruins by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-20.
Junior Noelle Langenkamp and freshman Sydney Engle led WKU offensively with eight kills each while both had a team-high three blocks at the net. Freshman Jessica Lucas posted 29 assists while tabbing a stat in each of the other categories, including eight digs, six kills, two blocks and one service ace. Sophomore Georgia O’Connell almost tied her career high in digs, as the libero notched 17 digs in front of a rowdy home crowd.
against the tourney field
WKU will meet up with Incarnate Word and Missouri State for the first time in program history. Saturday’s opponents in Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Oral Roberts will be the team’s only familiar foes, holding a 2-0 record against the Panthers and 1-1 versus Oral Roberts. However, WKU hasn’t played either one since the early 1990s.
young starting lineup
After graduating five seniors from the 2013 squad, the 2014 Lady Toppers have a lot of youth in their lineup, using three in the starting lineup over the first four games. Setter Jessica Lucas and outside hitters Alyssa Cavanaugh and Sydney Engle have each started the matches, adding immediate contributions to the team’s efforts. It is one of the youngest lineups WKU has put on the court since 2010 when setter Melanie Stutsman started every match, outside hitter Paige Wessel started 21-of-36 matches and defensive specialist Ashley Potts started 20-of-36 matches. Since 2005, only seven Lady Toppers in their first season on The Hill started every match.
The 2014 WKU volleyball season is being presented by the United States Marines. This season, the Marines and WKU Athletics are working together to promote the outstanding athletic and academic achievements of our female student-athletes. The Marines are proud to work with and support these future leaders of America.
