OWENSBORO, Ky - Greenwood left nothing to doubt in its first game of the day at the KHSAA State Softball Tournament.
The Lady Gators scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised to a 13-0 win in five innings over Notre Dame Friday morning.
"We had a nice little team talk yesterday about being the team favorite and letting our experience shine for us instead of coming out nervous with the jitters," said Greenwood head coach Penny Reece. "So I felt like they would come out today and they did."
Greenwood improves to 41-0 with the win and is three wins away from perfection. The Lady Gators are trying to become the first team in Kentucky fast pitch history to finish a season undefeated.
"We talked a little bit yesterday about walking the walk. Walk in here as the No. 1 team and the favorite," said Reece. "But then you have to take it onto the field and perform. I'm very proud of them as much as I was disappointed yesterday. Good turnaround."
The Lady Gators play No. 2 Lone Oak (31-3) at 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. The Purple Flash eliminated Greenwood from last year's state tournament.
"We've waited a year for this. We've waited a year for the matchup," said Reece. "We have to feel good about our chances. I was able to give (pitcher Elizabeth) Moss a rest and I think that is going to be able to benefit us at the end."
Greenwood is one of four teams without a loss through two games.
