Bowling Green, Ky. – Graduated Hilltopper javelin thrower Ignacio Guerra and WKU men’s and women’s track head coach Erik Jenkins will both be recognized at the 8th Annual Kentucky Association of USATF and the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (KTCCCA) banquet on Jan.5 in Lexington, Ky.
Guerra has been named the 2012 Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the KTCCCA, after his stellar career with his second-straight first-team All-America honors last June. He finished fourth in the javelin throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In two years on the Hill, Guerra set both the WKU and Chilean national records in the javelin. He also won two Sun Belt Conference titles and is considered one of the finest field athletes to have competed at WKU.
Jenkins has been named 2012 Men’s and Women’s Track Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season after helping lead the Hilltoppers to the first triple crown in Sun Belt Conference history. He also aided the Lady Toppers to a runner-up finish in the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Jenkins is by no means a stranger to coaching accolades, as he has now won the KTCCCA Women’s Coach of the Year three-straight times (2010-12) and Men’s Coach of the Year twice (2009, 2012). He’s led the WKU Track and Field programs to a combined 22 Sun Belt titles since taking the head coaching reins in 2008, producing 22 All-Americans and garnering 13 Sun Belt Coach of the Year honors along the way.
Guerra and Jenkins will be honored at Saturday’s banquet at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington, Ky. The event begins at 2:00 PM (CT) and reservations for non-honorees is $20.
