LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's basketball player and USA Basketball's Luke Hancock was picked as the official U.S. flag bearer for the World University Games, USA Head of Delegation Dr. Craig Jonas announced on Wednesday.
"I am very proud," Hancock said in Kazan, Russia, site of the World University Games. "I am not sure exactly what to expect, but I am looking forward to the opportunity.
"I'm honored to lead the way for the U.S. I'm excited."
The Roanoke, Va., native was selected from more than 280 athletes from 18 different sports on the various U.S. teams competing. He will bear the flag at the opening ceremonies on July 6, which are slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET.
The rising senior played in all 40 games in 2012-13 and was instrumental in Louisville's third NCAA national title. For the season, Hancock knocked down a team-best 63 3-pointers and totaled 40 steals. In the national championship victory over Michigan, the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player totaled 22 points and two steals, going 5-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Hancock and the U.S. open pool play on July 7 against United Arab Emirates at 10:30 a.m. ET.
