BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU football team returned to Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium for the second of 15 scheduled spring practices Saturday morning. The practice came a day after an early-evening practice on Friday, which kicked off the first weekend of spring ball.

The offense and the quarterbacks took center-stage on Saturday, as offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm, along with quarterbacks James Mauro, DaMarcus Smith and Brandon Doughty all discussed the offensive scheme and the learning process in spring practice.

“I think right now all three of them are working hard,” Brohm said of the three quarterbacks. “They are putting in the time. There are plenty of things to work on, without question. I think that they are all willing to absorb things and they are willing to learn. It is about getting better every day. We have to get better not only learning the offense but also throwing the football and our mechanics, our fundamentals, our technique. If we do those things as well, then we will gradually get better each and every day.”

Mauro, Smith and Doughty will all be competing for the starting spot heading into the 2013 season following the graduation to former Hilltopper quarterback Kawaun Jakes. The unit has used the time and the competition to build quite the relationship in the meeting room and off the field.

“The relationship that we have built with each other is pretty unique getting to see these guys,” Smith said. “We are pretty much forced to have a good relationship since we are together every day and especially being a quarterback in [Coach] Petrino’s offense we have to spend so much time watching film and having meetings and going over this offense. We have definitely built a great relationship off the field. I have been able to learn from those guys, especially Brandon Doughty and James Mauro. They are both two very smart quarterbacks. They are good for me to learn from.”

The quarterbacks have benefitted from a load of reps over the first two practices, working in various drills in individual and team settings, while continuing to get a full grasp on the new schemes under head coach Bobby Petrino and offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm.

“You can never get too many reps, but it is not just the quarterbacks, it is new for everybody,” Mauro said. “Everyone has a new system and something new to learn. We can’t just say it’s hard for us when everyone is dealing with the same thing. We have to be there and we have to pick it up quicker and have the other guys come along.”

“I think it has been good,” Doughty said. “We have been pressing a little bit as a team, but we are going to make strides. Every single day we are trying to get better. These first couple of days people are a little nervous going out there and trying to over-think things, but we are going to get better.”

The Hilltoppers will wrap up the first week of spring practice with a 10:00 AM practice on Sunday at Houchens-Smith Stadium. All of the practices will be open to the public. Complete coverage of all spring practices can be found at WKUSports.com.
