BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Football opened up the week in shoulder pads for the first time this fall as it prepares for the season opener against Bowling Green on Aug. 29 at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

The Hilltoppers got their first chance for some real contact in the third practice of the fall as they gear up for the regular season that sits just 25 days away. The first contact practice created spirited competition between the offense and defense, a practice in which the defense appeared to hold the upper hand.

“Coach Brohm said the key for us is to get lined up, be disciplined and give great effort and we’re doing that so far,” redshirt junior linebacker Nick Holt told WKUSports.com.

Holt enters his first season with the Hilltoppers and aims to fill a void at linebacker after WKU’s starting trio from 2013 departs. He is confident that WKU’s disciplined effort on defense will lead to success in 2014.

“I think we play really good together as a defense,” said Holt. “We are going to surprise a lot of people just by playing smart and knowing all of our assignments. We’re going to out-hustle everyone and give great effort. That is how we are going to be a very good defense.”

First-year offensive coordinator Tyson Helton spoke with the local media about WKU’s quarterbacks and its offensive scheme following Monday’s practice.

“We’re going to do whatever it takes to win,” said Helton. “We’re not going to go past what this offense is and this offense has been successful. We’re going to be what we are. Whatever our opponent gives us, that is what we are going to take.”

The Hilltoppers come back to the gridiron Tuesday at 5:30 for another practice open to the public. All practices are open through Aug. 15. A complete practice schedule can be found on WKUSports.com.
