NASHVILLE, Tenn.— The Western Kentucky University softball team (28-13, 12-3 SBC) used four home runs to sweep Lipscomb (24-20) on Wednesday after notching wins of 8-2 and 7-1 at Draper Diamond.

Junior Olivia Watkins tabbed four hits through the two games while sophomore Shawna Sadler went 4-for-4 in game one.

Game One—WKU 8, Lipscomb 2

WKU used the long ball to notch an 8-2 win over Lipscomb in game one.

The Lady Toppers put up three home runs in the contest, as the hits accounted for seven of the eight runs.

Junior Emily Rousseau (15-5) allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven. Lipscomb’s Tanner Sanders (14-8) took the loss after giving up 12 hits and three walks while fanning six batters.

Lipscomb took an early 1-0 lead after a Paige Neely solo home run went over the center field fence in the top first. However, WKU responded in the next frame with a senior Katrina Metoyer two-run home run to set the score at 2-1. The shot scored Sadler, as she reached on a hit to shallow center while moving to second on a stolen base.

In the bottom third, Lipscomb tied it at 2 apiece after a double and sacrifice bunt moved Brittany Elmore to third for Bridgette Begle’s RBI single to add the run. The scoring knot was broken in the top fourth after senior Karavin Dew belted her first home run of the season down the left field line.

One more run came across the plate for WKU in the fifth after a RBI double from Sadler. Junior Kelsie Mattox walked in the inning’s second at-bat with one out. Freshman Bethany Oglesby came in to pinch run at first, as she moved to second on a groundout before adding the run to bring the score to 5-2.

WKU used the long ball to extend its advantage to 8-2 in the top sixth after sophomore Preslie Cruce hit her tenth home run of the season toward left center to score Metoyer and Dew.

Game Two—WKU 7, Lipscomb 1

Watkins went 2-for-3 with three runs while Thomas added two runs to help lift WKU to a 7-1 win in game two.

Senior Mallorie Sulaski (8-6) pitched six innings to allow three hits and one walk while striking out three. Sophomore Janna Scheff finished the game to retire all three batters in the seventh inning. Lipscomb’s Heather Parker (9-11) went the distance to allow eight hits and striking out three.

WKU jumped ahead 2-0 in the first, as a RBI triple from Thomas brought in Watkins from second. Thomas easily scored the second run after a RBI single from Mattox went down the right field line.

With two outs in the second, Garcia laid a double just out of reach in right field to bring in Cruce and Watkins to lift WKU’s lead to 4-0. Lipscomb would cut the lead to 4-1 after Neely hit a RBI double to the right-center fence in the bottom.

Senior Shelby Taylor opened the seventh with a first-pitch double to the left-center gap before moving to third on a groundout. Taylor made it 5-1 after a RBI double from Watkins while Thomas finalized the game at 7-1 with her 11th home run of the season.
