Bowling Green, KY – In Game 1 of the 2013 Midwest League Quarterfinals, the Bowling Green Hot Rods fell to the Fort Wayne TinCaps 6-1 at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday night. The Hot Rods remain winless in five all-time playoff contests and face an elimination game in this best-of-three series on Thursday night at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. Marty Gantt recorded the only hit of the night for the Hot Rods.
The TinCaps scored the game’s first two runs in the top of the third inning. Rodney Daal began the inning with a sharp double into the left field corner and advanced to third base on a Mallex Smith bunt single. After Smith stole second base, the next two hitters brought in the first two runs via RBI groundouts.
The top of the fifth saw the TinCaps add a run to their early lead on an RBI double by Reynaldo Bruguera. Two Hot Rods errors contributed to Fort Wayne scoring three runs to break the game open in the top of the sixth inning.
Fort Wayne starting pitcher Joe Ross was dominant, allowing just one hit and two walks in six shutout innings. The best scoring chance for the Hot Rods came in the second inning when runners were stranded at first and second base.
The only Hot Rods offense came in the bottom of the ninth inning when TinCaps closer Roman Madrid walked four Hot Rods hitters. Tyler Goeddel drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Andrew Toles, but Trevor Gott then entered the game and struck out Marty Gantt to secure the win for the TinCaps.
The two teams now set turn their attention to Game 2 of the Midwest League Quarterfinals, which will be hosted by the TinCaps at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, IN at 6:05 PM CDT. The Hot Rods will send RHP Reinaldo Lopez to the mound opposite RHP Zach Eflin of the TinCaps.
