Appleton, Wisc. – A three-run fourth inning erased a deficit, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) were unable to hold that advantage as they fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Milwaukee Brewers) on Wednesday night, 6-3. The game was the opener of a three-game set that also served as the lid-lifter for a six-game road trip for Bowling Green.
The Timber Rattlers raced out to an early lead, as Clint Coulter drove home Chris McFarland with two outs in the first inning to put Wisconsin on the board. In the second, Jose Pena hit a solo blast with two outs to double the Timber Rattler advantage to 2-0, but that lead was toppled in the fourth.
After three hitless innings, Julian Ridings put the first hit on the board for the Hot Rods with a lead-off single in the fourth. Juniel Querecuto followed with a hit of his own, and one out later, Ty Young singled home Ridings to cut the lead to 2-1. Armando Araiza then drew a walk to load the bases, and Darryl George would cap the inning with a two-run single that gave Bowling Green a 3-2 advantage.
That lead would last until a two-run rally for Wisconsin turned the tables once again. In the bottom of the sixth, Coulter powered his fifteenth home run of the season to lead-off the frame and knot the game once again. Dustin DeMuth would later single home Taylor Brennan to put the Timber Rattlers back in front, 4-3.
Two runs were added by Wisconsin to salt their lead. Coulter drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, and Steve Halcomb sent Omar Garcia home in the eighth with a run-scoring single. The run capped the game’s scoring in Wisconsin’s 6-3 triumph.
Trevor Williams (7-1) entered the game in the fifth, and the Midwest League All-Star recorded the win. He tossed five innings of shutout relief, and struck out five batters as well.
William Gabay (1-1) allowed three runs over three frames out of the Bowling Green bullpen and took the loss.
