Eastlake, OH – Cameron Seitzer drove in three runs and Drew Vettleson tallied three hits, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods fell to the Lake County Captains 5-4 on Wednesday night at Classic Park in Game 1 of the Midwest League Quarterfinals. In the one-run loss, the Hot Rods were 2-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12. Jake Partridge hurled 5.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Things started positively for the Hot Rods in the top of the first inning when the team loaded the bases with nobody out. With one out in the inning, Alejandro Segovia beat out a potential double play to drive in the game’s first run. That was it for the Hot Rods in the inning, though, as the team stranded two runners.
Starter Parker Markel struggled from the onset on Wednesday. The Captains scored the next five runs in the game over the first three innings against Markel, who only lasted 2.2 innings. Jake Partridge entered the game and did not allow a run over the final 5.1 innings, keeping the Hot Rods close throughout.
The Hot Rods loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, looking to get back into the game. Cameron Seitzer lined a double into centerfield to clear the bases and bring the Hot Rods to within one at 5-4.
That was the last clutch hit of the night for the Hot Rods, who did not score another run despite bringing runners into scoring position in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings.
With runners at first and second base and two outs, Captains closer Enosil Tejada struck out Taylor Motter to end the game.
The two teams now head south for the all-important Game 2 from Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Kentucky at 7:05 PM CDT. The Hot Rods will give the start to LHP Ryan Carpenter (0-0, 0.00), while the Captains will counter with RHP Mason Radeke (0-0, 0.00).
