Bowling Green, Ky. – German Marquez, Andrew Hanse, and Josh Kimborowicz combined to allow just two hits and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) posted yet another shutout victory on Wednesday night over the South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks), 3-0.
Marquez left with the game still scoreless and did not factor into the decision, but he was brilliant in his five innings. He allowed just one hit and issued two walks, while striking out six batters. Over his past five starts, Marquez has posted a 2.28 earned run average. Hanse (1-3) entered in relief of Marquez and continued the pitching dominance. He picked up the win and allowed just one hit while fanning four. Kimborowicz tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.
The only scoring of the ballgame came across in the bottom of the sixth. Pat Blair led off with a single that went off the glove of South Bend pitcher Adam Miller. Oscar Hernandez followed with a line-drive single up the middle, and Ty Young hit a dribbler up the first-base line but reached safely to load the bases. Alexander Simon then put Bowling Green on the board as he lashed a single through the right side to plate Blair. Armando Araiza grounded into a double play to score Hernandez and move Young to third base. Elias Torres then came through in the clutch with a big two-out single to left-center field to expand the lead to 3-0.
It would turn out to be all the offense the pitching staff would need, as the Hot Rods hurlers posted their third shutout victory in just the past five games. In addition to the shutouts, Bowling Green limited South Bend to just one run on Tuesday night. The win gives Bowling Green four victories in their last five contests.
Sean Furney started for South Bend and threw five scoreless innings, but Miller (4-1) relieved him and conceded three runs in the sixth inning to earn the loss.
