Eastlake, OH - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (30-22) split a doubleheader with the Lake County Captains (16-33) on Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park, winning game one 8-5 but falling in game two 6-5. In his Midwest League debut, Brandon Martin struck a two-run home run in each of the two games as the Hot Rods slugged five home runs as a team on Wednesday. Joey Rickard hit a pair of solo home runs in game one, becoming the first Hot Rod with a multi-homer game in 2013.
Rickard struck his first solo home run just two batters into the game in the early affair. Later in the inning, Tyler Goeddel batted with the bases loaded and tripled into the left-centerfield gap to bring in three tallies. The Hot Rods brought nine men to the plate in the first inning of game one, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Rickard made it 5-1 with another solo home run in the top of the second inning.
Batting with a 6-1 lead in the top of the third, Martin hit his first of two two-run homers on the day, sending a ball over the wall in left field. The two-run shot occurred during Martin's second at bat as a Hot Rods, giving the team a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Captains then scored four unanswered runs to cut into the Hot Rods lead. Trailing 8-5, the Captains stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning as Nick Sawyer came in to relieve Blake Snell. Sawyer then faced the minimum over the final two frames to preserve the Hot Rods win.
Game two saw the Hot Rods jump out to another big lead. In the top of the second, Goeddel and Martin each struck a two-run home run, and the Hot Rods led 5-1. However, the Captains again surged past the Hot Rods, scoring the final five runs of game two unanswered. Anthony Santander singled home Dorssys Paulino in the bottom of the seventh to provide the Captains with the walk-off win.
