Bowling Green, Ky. – The Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) forced extra innings on Saturday night, but the Clinton LumberKings (Seattle Mariners) scored eight runs in the top of the tenth inning to win, 9-1. The loss extends the Hot Rods’ losing streak to 13 games.
Bowling Green received great pitching from their starter Hunter Wood, however he did concede a run in the third inning. With one out, Justin Seager doubled. Following a walk to Christian Carmichael and a strikeout, Lonnie Kauppila singled to load the bases. Jack Reinheimer knocked a base hit to right field to plate Seager, but Carmichael was thrown out at home plate by right fielder James Harris to end the inning.
The game remained 1-0 until the Hot Rods tied it in the sixth. Darryl George began the rally when he reached second base on an error by third baseman Joseph DeCarlo. He moved to third on a fly out by Harris, and was advanced home to score when Pat Blair doubled down the right-field line. It knotted the game at one in the sixth.
The game remained tied, and entered the 10th inning. That’s when the LumberKings broke out for eight runs. Clinton sent nine men to the plate without an out being recorded, and the frame was highlighted by a two-run single by Jeff Zimmerman. Also recording RBIs in the frame was Kauppila, Austin Wilson, and DeCarlo.
Wood worked four innings in his start for the Hot Rods. He allowed just one run over four innings, and struck out a season-high six batters. Aaron Griffin relieved him and worked four shutout frames, as he conceded just three hits, one walk, and posted four strikeouts. Brad Schreiber (0-1) picked up the loss.
Lars Huijer was a late addition to the mound for Clinton, and he pitched into the fifth without allowing a run. Original scheduled starter Tommy Burns allowed the lone-run to cross for Bowling Green.
