Dayton, OH - Phil Wunderlich and Steve Tinoco each drove in two runs on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as the Hot Rods lost their first game of the season, 5-4, to the Dayton Dragons. The loss snaps Bowling Green's 13-game winning streak at Fifth Third Field heading into the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Wunderlich and Tinoco combined to put the Hot Rods on top early in this game, producing a run in the top of the first inning. Tinoco singled in his first Hot Rods at-bat, scoring two batters later when Wunderlich smacked a double to deep center field to put Bowling Green on top 1-0.
An inning later, it was Tinoco's turn to drive the runs home. A walk, an error, and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. After Hector Guevara and Cody Rogers were retired by Tanner Robles, Tinoco smacked a single to left-center to plate two and give the Hot Rods a 3-0 lead.
After Hot Rods starter Braulio Lara surrendered a pair of runs in the second, the Hot Rods added another run in the fourth. With two outs and a man at first, Robles loaded the bases with another walk and another hit batter, bringing up Wunderlich with two outs. The Louisville product showed his patience, drawing a bases loaded walk to plate Cody Rogers for a 4-2 lead.
Lara lasted just three innings for the Hot Rods, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks. Dayton clawed a run closer against Eliazer Suero in the sixth before taking the lead with three hits and a pair of runs in the seventh against Matt Stabelfeld.
Tinoco finished the game 2-4 with his first two RBI of the season. Wunderlich added two RBI as well, giving him three in the last two contests.
The Hot Rods will try again for the series victory in the finale on Sunday afternoon. RHP George Jensen makes his 2011 debut against Dayton RHP Daniel Tuttle. First pitch is at 1 PM CDT. You can listen to the game beginning at 12:35 PM CDT with Tom Gauthier at 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
