BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The WKU Lady Topper Basketball program will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico in December to participate in the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic at the Coliseo Guillermo Angulo Carolina as part of the 2013-14 non-conference schedule. WKU will face Belmont on Friday, Dec. 20 before facing off with Georgetown on Saturday, Dec. 21. Both games are schedule to tip at 11:00 am CT.
“We are looking forward to the chance to take our team to Puerto Rico this winter,” said head coach Michelle Clark-Heard. “This is a unique opportunity for our team and a great chance to play some challenging opponents in a neutral setting. Belmont went to the postseason last year and finished with 11 wins in their conference while Georgetown finished in the top 100 of the RPI in a league that produced the two teams that played in the National Championship game.”
WKU and Belmont will meet for the first time since the 1998-99 season when WKU posted a 94-54 win over the Bruins. It will be the ninth meeting in series history. Belmont will be led by first-year head coach Cameron Newbauer, a former assistant to Jeff Walz at Louisville. Newbauer replaced the spot on the Louisville coaching staff that opened when Clark-Heard accepted the head coaching position at WKU in 2012.
The game with Georgetown will mark the first meeting between the schools.
Lady Topper Basketball last visited Puerto Rico in the 1993-94 season, playing in the San Juan Shootout. The Lady Toppers defeated InterAmerican, DePaul and Ole Miss on the way to winning the championship of the event. It is one of 16 invitational tournaments that WKU has won in program history, including WKU’s Wright State Invitational crown in 2012-13.
Fan packages for the games in Puerto Rico are available through Sports Tours International. Contact Sallie Gordon with Sport Tours International at 414-228-7337 or firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
The two-game swing in Puerto Rico is part of a non-conference schedule that also includes a meeting with Louisville in E.A. Diddle Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 7:00 p.m. CT. The complete non-conference schedule will be released in early July with the entire schedule, including Sun Belt Conference play, to be released at a later date.
In her first year as coach of the Lady Toppers, Clark-Heard engineered one of the nation’s best turnarounds. She led WKU to 13 additional wins over the prior season, setting the Sun Belt Conference record for largest winning improvement. She also helped WKU to eight additional conference wins over the prior season, tying the league record. Following the regular season, she was named the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
The Lady Toppers return seven letterwinners from last year’s squad, including all five starters. The returning roster includes All-America Candidates Alexis Govan and Chastity Gooch.
