Bowling Green, KY – Jeff Malm drove in four runs, but a five-run second inning for the South Bend Silver Hawks (23-22, 58-57) was enough in their 6-4 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-18, 65-50) on Wednesday night. In the first game of a three-game set at Bowling Green Ballpark, Drew Vettleson also tripled. The Hot Rods brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but the comeback effort fell short.
With Bowling Green’s Ryan Carpenter and South Bend’s Archie Bradley facing off, Bowling Green Ballpark was set up for a fantastic pitching matchup, but that’s not how the game fared in the early portion on Wednesday night.
Carpenter entered the outing with only four earned runs allowed at home in 56.0 innings this season. However, in the top of the second inning, the Silver Hawks scored five runs to take a 5-0 advantage. Carpenter surrendered three home runs and two doubles in an inning where the Silver Hawks brought nine men the plate.
Bowling Green got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of some wildness from Bradley, who walked four men in his six frames. His third and fourth walks were immediately followed by a two-out double from Jeff Malm into the gap in right-centerfield to cut the Silver Hawk lead to just three runs.
Both pitchers settled down and were able to work around one-inning hiccups. Carpenter was just one over the minimum in every other inning except the five-run second, and Bradley allowed just the lone two runs to earn his tenth win of the season.
Malm’s third and fourth RBI’s occurred in the bottom of the eighth inning when he singled to right field with runner at second and third with one out. South Bend reliable reliever Seth Simmons then came in and slammed the door on the Hot Rods, recording the final five outs for his first save of the season.
The Hot Rods and Silver Hawks continue their three-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 PM CDT. Bowling Green will give the pearl to RHP Trevor Shull (3-6, 5.59), while South Bend will counter with RHP J.R. Bradley (6-7, 5.68).
