Bowling Green, Ky. — The 2012-13 season — and a new era of Lady Topper Basketball under head coach Michelle Clark-Heard — officially got underway Monday afternoon as WKU held its first practice at E.A. Diddle Arena.
In a rule change implemented three years ago, teams are allowed to hold 30 practices beginning 40 days prior to their first regular-season game. The Lady Toppers will tip off the year at Murray State on Nov. 9.
“I was really impressed with the intensity of the girls and how hard we worked,” said Heard. “This is one of the days I’ve been dreaming for.”
WKU returns just five players from last year’s squad, but after being hired on March 22, 2012, Heard and her staff were able to sign four additional newcomers in the late signing period to go along with the two that inked with WKU last fall.
“A lot of today was setting the tone for where we are trying to go. We talk about energy, passion and getting better at the things we know we are good at,” explained Heard. “Today was just a first stepping stone towards that.”
In addition to their time on the practice floor, the Lady Toppers will join the Hilltopper basketball team next Friday (Oct. 12) for Hilltopper Hysteria from 6-9 p.m. (CDT) at Diddle Arena. The free event will begin after WKU’s nationally-ranked volleyball team hosts Florida International beginning at 6 p.m.
WKU will take the floor for the first time for an exhibition game against Harding University at 6 p.m. on Nov. 2. Season tickets for Lady Topper Basketball are available by contacting the WKU ticket office at 1-800-5 BIG RED, or online at www.wkusports.com.
