MONROE, La.—The No. 20 Western Kentucky University volleyball team (20-3, 6-0 SBC) earned its 20th win of the 2012 season after defeating Louisiana-Monroe (4-11, 0-6 SBC) by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-17) on Sunday afternoon at the ULM Activity Center.
Redshirt junior Paige Wessel and freshman Haley Bodway tabbed nine kills each, as Wessel hit .600 for the match. Sophomore Heather Boyan posted six kills while senior Jordyn Skinner and freshman Noelle Langenkamp collected five kills apiece.
Junior Ashley Potts had 11 digs in the contest while fellow classmate Melanie Stutsman added eight of her own.
For the Warhawks, Samantha Morse tallied 10 kills while Blanca Ocana and Zuzana Markova had six each. Marcela Araya led the back row defense with 12 digs.
Down 5-1 early in the first set, WKU notched a 4-1 run to tie the game at 9. ULM quickly broke the tie with a 5-1 run of its own to take the lead at 14-10 and force a WKU timeout. The Lady Toppers worked their way back after getting down as much as five points, as they knotted the game at 18. From that point, WKU closed the set with a 7-3 run to seal the first set at 25-21.
Two kills and two blocks to open the second frame helped WKU to a 5-0 advantage. ULM would get within three at 6-3, but a 7-1 run by the Lady Toppers that included kills from Boyan, Wessel and Bodway lifted WKU to a 14-4 lead. Ahead 16-11, WKU used another big scoring run of 6-1 to climb ahead 22-12 on its way to a 25-14 win.
ULM started the third set with the first three points of the contest. WKU quickly responded by posting its first lead of the set at 5-4 thanks to two kills apiece from Bodway and Spears and solo block from Boyan. With WKU taking a two-point lead at 8-6, the Warhawks made their way back into the game by tying the game at 8 and resuming the lead at 10-9. After three more tied scores, the Lady Toppers took a 7-2 rally to regain the lead at 19-15, as the team would go on to win 25-17.
WKU returns home for the next two weekends, as the Lady Toppers open the home stand with Florida International on Friday, October 12 at 6 p.m. before facing Florida Atlantic on Saturday, October 13 at 2 p.m.
