No. 23 WKU Volleyball Starts Four-Game Road Trip at Louisiana

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—The No. 23 Western Kentucky University volleyball team (16-3, 2-0 SBC) will open a four-game road stand against Sun Belt Conference opponents starting on Friday, September 28 against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (9-8, 1-1 SBC) at 7 p.m. in Earl K. Long Gym.

The Lady Toppers enter the match on an eight-game win streak and winning 16 of the last 17 games. WKU opened conference play last weekend with a pair of three-set sweeps against Troy and South Alabama. With the start of the conference schedule, WKU has now won 16-consecutive matches against SBC opponents, including the three matches the Lady Toppers played to take the SBC Tournament championship in 2011.

Quick Notes
• On Monday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll moved the WKU volleyball team up one spot from No. 24 to No. 23. After entering the poll last week for just the second time in school history, WKU has now reached the highest ranking ever in program history.
• With the team’s 3-0 win over Troy on Friday, WKU earned the program’s 700th all-time win. The milestone ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference for program wins, as Arkansas State leads the pack with 905 wins. Following the win against South Alabama on Saturday, the team now has an all-time record of 701-454 for a winning percentage of .607 in its 31-year history.
• For the second week in a row, junior Ashley Potts was named the SBC Defensive Player of the Week after her performance against Belmont, Troy and South Alabama. Potts led the team in digs with 42 while hitting double-figure digs in each match. Her 4.00 average over the weekend was the best in the SBC to start conference play. The Louisville, Ky., native helped hold WKU’s three opponents to a .122 hitting percentage.
• Sophomore Heather Boyan raised the bar this past week, as she set new career highs for herself. After tying her season and career high of 12 kills at Belmont on Tuesday, Boyan shattered that with 16 kills against the Jaguars. The Munster, Ind., native also tied her season and career high in digs at Belmont with six.
• As a team and individually, WKU holds some of the top 50 spots in the nation statistically. As a team, WKU is 19th in hitting percentage, 40th in assists and 50th in kills. Junior Melanie Stutsman is 38th in the nation in assists while redshirt junior Paige Wessel is 44th in hitting percentage.
• WKU holds 15-straight wins against the Ragin’ Cajuns, including three-set sweeps in the last nine meetings. The team holds a 9-2 record in away games versus UL. The last loss for the Lady Toppers came in 1999 at a score of 2-3 in Lafayette.
• The trip to Lafayette will be WKU’s fifth true road match of the season, as the team has a 3-1 mark in away games After dropping the first game and road contest of the season at Louisville, WKU won the following three: Virginia, No. 22 Michigan and Belmont.
