Bowling Green, KY – Marty Gantt struck his fourth home run of the season to lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods (16-6) to a 9-4 series-opening win over the Peoria Chiefs (10-10) on Sunday evening at Bowling Green Ballpark. Granden Goetzman tripled home three runs in his Hot Rods debut, and Patrick Leonard also chipped in with two hits.

After Eduar Quinonez hurled a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, the Hot Rods got to work at the plate early Sunday evening. The Hot Rods plated two runs and brought seven men to the plate in their initial inning at the plate. Justin O’Conner drove in the game’s first run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field. Later in the frame, the first of two Leonard singles brought in the second run with two outs.

The Chiefs then scored the next three runs of the contest off Quinonez to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the third. However, the lead did not last long. Again with the bases loaded, Goetzman tripled to the wall in left-centerfield to clear the bases to provide Bowling Green with a 5-3 lead. It was just the second at bat in a Hot Rods uniform of for Goetzman.

Still just a two-run game heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Hot Rods offense broke the game open in the frame with four runs. Tommy Coyle continued his tremendous homestand by doubling in two runs to give the Hot Rods a 7-3 advantage. Just two batters later, Gantt lined a homerun into the Home Run Grill in left field for his fourth home run of the season.

Quinonez settled in to retire seven of the final eight batters he faced to earn his second win of the season. Jose Molina and Ryan Garton continued a successful trend of solid relief pitching for the Hot Rods as they allowed just one run in four frames. Bowling Green’s bullpen has surrendered just two runs in their last 19 innings on the mound, which is good for a 0.95 ERA.
