Bowling Green, Ky. – Despite a different opponent, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) suffered another tough loss at Bowling Green Ballpark on Thursday night. The Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) scored just one run, but it was enough to emerge victorious in the series opener.
The Hot Rods fell 1-0 for the second straight game, and the Loons’ lone score came in the fourth inning. Joey Curletta led off with a single through the left side. He broke to move up to second on a pitch that got away from catcher Oscar Hernandez, and Hernandez’s throw went into center field. Curletta reached third on the play. He would score when Webster Rivas followed with a run-scoring single. The run was unearned.
Bowling Green starter Jake Faria (7-9) dropped a 1-0 decision to Dayton in his last start, and he was handed the hard-luck decision again Thursday night. He went five innings and allowed just the one unearned run. Faria scattered six hits, and struck out four while issuing just one free pass.
Stone Speer relieved Faria in the sixth, and the left-hander went on to record three scoreless frames. He made a nice defensive play to start the sixth, scooping the baseball with his glove to first-baseman Pat Blair. D.J. Slaton worked the ninth inning, but the pitching effort was not enough.
The Loons staff used four pitchers to record the two-hitter, and piggy-back starter Zachary Bird (6-15) received the win. Starter John Richy, Matt Campbell, and Jacob Rhame also were used in the win.
The homestand continues with a big night at the ballpark Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT on Fireworks Friday presented by WBKO and All-Hit WUHU 107.1, and Princess and Pirate Night will also be celebrated. Gates will open at 6 p.m. with a princess and pirate theme all night.
The fireworks show will follow the conclusion of the baseball game. For tickets and more information, fans can logon to BGHotRods.com, call 270-901-2121, or visit the Bowling Green Ballpark box office.
