Bowling Green, KY – Joey Rickard had three hits for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (67-50, 29-20) in a 6-5 loss to the Lake County Captains (46-69, 23-25) on Saturday night at Classic Park. The loss, accompanied wins by Great Lakes and Dayton, drops the Hot Rods out of first place and gives them a two-game lead in the Wild Card race with 21 games to play. Midwest League hits leader Andrew Toles also had two hits for the Hot Rods.
Already trailing 3-0 in the third inning thanks to a Jorge Martinez three-run home run, the Hot Rods got on the board courtesy of Luke Maile. With Joey Rickard at first base and two outs in the inning, Maile tripled down the line in right field to cut into the Captain lead. Down 5-1 in the in the top of the sixth inning, it was another two-out extra-base hit that allowed the Hot Rods to acquire another run. Tommy Coyle stood on first base when Marty Gantt doubled off the wall in right field to score Coyle and bring the Hot Rods to within three runs.
The offensive rally rolled over into the top of the seventh inning for the Hot Rods. Brandon Martin began with a walk, which was followed by a Toles double into left field. Rickard then doubled on a fly ball to right field to score Martin. Two more runs came in to tie the score on a Maile groundout and a Justin O’Conner sacrifice fly.
However, Logan Vick’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning broke the 5-5 tie and sent the Hot Rods to their sixth loss in their last eight games.
Bowling Green continues their ten-game road trip with the middle-game of a three-game series in Lake County on Sunday at 12:30 PM CDT. The Hot Rods will give the start to LHP Blake Snell (3-7, 4.00) opposite the Captains RHP Josh Tomlin (0-0, 0.00) in a Major League Rehab Assignment.
