Rousseau's Two-Hit Effort Leads WKU Softball to 5-1 Win atBelmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Senior Emily Rousseau had a two-hit performance in the pitching circle after holding Belmont hitless until the sixth inning, as the Western Kentucky University softball team (25-13-1) took a 5-1 win at Belmont (11-23) on Wednesday at E.S. Rose Park.

Rousseau (14-9) retired 16 of her first 17 batters, as she dished out one walk and two strikeouts in the complete game. Belmont’s Katie Clancy (0-1) took the loss after giving up five hits, four runs and three walks in 2.2 innings of work. Carolyn Snodgress came in the final frames and gave up seven hits plus the final run with five strikeouts.

Senior Olivia Watkins and sophomore Bethany Oglesby each had three hits while junior Shawna Sadler had two to help WKU total 12 in the contest. WKU stole four bases with Watkins taking three of them.

WKU quickly took to the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. A pair of walks to junior Preslie Cruce and Watkins started the inning before a double to right center by Sadler scored Cruce. With Watkins on third, the Alabama native would score on a sacrifice fly to center from freshman Andie Martin.

The Lady Toppers doubled its runs in the third, as Watkins stood on second after a bunt single and stolen base in the first at-bat. Sadler then put a single past the infield to score Watkins. After senior Kelsie Mattox moved Sadler to second with a hit by pitch, Martin added her second RBI in the contest with a single down the third-base line and set the score at 4-0.

Another infield single in the sixth allowed Watkins to get on base in each of her at-bats in the game. After moving to second, Watkins stole third before a squeeze play brought in Watkins to make it a 5-0 ballgame. Belmont got its first two hits of the contest in the bottom frame, putting the score at 5-1. Two one-out singles plus a passed ball put runners in scoring position before an error allowed the run to score.

WKU is home on Thursday, April 10 against Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m. CT.
