BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—A solid all-around effort from the Western Kentucky University softball team (26-13-1) led the Lady Toppers to a 9-0 win in five innings over Mississippi Valley State (7-31) on Thursday at the WKU Softball Complex.
It began in the circle with junior Janna Scheff tossing a one-hitter and earning her first win of the season. Scheff struck out three and walked two while not giving up the lone hit until a bloop single with two outs in the top fifth.
At the plate, seniors Olivia Watkins and Kelsie Mattox along with freshman Amber Williams had two hits each while Mattox posted four RBI. Watkins and Williams had two stolen bases each, as Watkins tied the single-season mark for swiped bags after she had 38 last season.
WKU jumped ahead early with a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. After Watkins reached on a bunt single and stole second and third, she would score on a RBI single from Mattox. Junior Preslie Cruce would also score on a groundout to second from senior Amanda Thomas.
The Lady Toppers exploded in the second inning for five runs, as Williams got things started after a single and steal of second. A junior Shawna Sadler walk loaded the bases before a Watkins single brought in Williams. With two outs, Mattox cleared the bases with a double followed by Thomas doubling to left field to set the score at 7-0.
Another run in the third plus one more in the fourth finished the game’s offense at 9-0. Williams once again scored after a throw trying to get sophomore Brooke Holloway stealing went long, allowing Williams to run home from third. Sophomore Bethany Oglesby then hit her first-career home run after taking a 1-0 pitch over the right center field fence.
WKU hits the road for Sun Belt Conference action this weekend at ULM. The three-game series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. CT and concluding with the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
