Bowling Green, Ky. – Jaime Schultz left little room for improvement in his first start, but he did just that on Thursday night. Schultz tied the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) franchise record with 12 strikeouts as the Hot Rods shutout the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians), 5-0.
Schultz (1-0) joins Matt Moore (June 6, 2009) and Braulio Lara (July 6, 2011) as the only Hot Rods to have struck out 12 batters in one contest. Even more impressive, he tied the record in just five and two-thirds innings. Schultz struck out the side on two occasions, the top of the first and top of the fifth. He allowed only four base runners, two hits and two walks, en route to his first decision of the season in just his second start.
The Hot Rods scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the second. Granden Goetzman led off with a hard single up the middle. He then stole second base, and advanced to third base on a groundout. Pat Blair followed with a groundout to second base to late Goetzman and give Bowling Green a 1-0 advantage.
The game remained tight until the Hot Rods broke it open with four runs in the seventh. Ty Young started the rally with a single to right field. He advanced to third base on a throwing error on Luis Lugo, who tried to pick him off. With the infield drawn in, Armando Araiza singled down the left-field line to drive Young home. Goetzman then smashed a single through the left side, and Ariel Soriano doubled both Araiza and Goetzman home for the highlight of the inning. Juniel Querecuto capped the frame off when he drove in Soriano on a base hit off of Lugo.
Ian Kendall relieved Schultz in the sixth to record the final out, and he also tossed scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth as he lowered his season earned run average to 1.85. Colton Reavis retired the side in the ninth to seal the win.
Dace Kime (0-7) had a great start, but his performance was lost because of the Schultz outing. Kime went five innings and allowed just one run on one hit, but he earned the hard-luck loss. Lugo conceded four runs in his three innings out of the Lake County bullpen.
The Hot Rods will try to build upon their fourth shutout victory of the season when they host Lake County on Friday night. It will be just the second game of a nine-game homestand for Bowling Green, and a spectacular fireworks show will follow the 7:05 p.m. contest thanks to WBKO and All-Hit WUHU – 107.1. First-rounder Blake Snell (2-2, 2.16) will go for his third victory of the season, and gates will open at 6 p.m. Tickets and more information can be obtained at BGHotRods.com, by calling 270-901-2121, or by visiting the Bowling Green Ballpark box office.
