BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Ahead of their first season as Conference USA members, seven WKU Hilltoppers were named to Phil Steele’s All-Conference USA Preseason Teams, the publication released on Tuesday.
Headlining the bunch, senior tight end Mitchell Henry was named to the All-C-USA First Team, taking the lone spot for a tight end on the first team. Senior defensive back Cam Thomas, who was named to the All-Sun Belt first team at the end of the 2013 campaign, picked up All-C-USA second team honors.
Henry was WKU’s primary pass-catching tight end last season, seeing action in all 12 games with six starts. He led WKU’s tight ends with 25 catches for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns, finding the endzone against both Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette. He led the team in receiving yardage twice during the 2013 season, posting 65 yards against both Kentucky and ULM. He caught at least one pass in each of WKU’s first eight games and in 10-of-12 overall for the season.
Thomas is coming off a productive junior season that saw the defensive back post five interceptions, 15 passes defended and 10 pass breakups. Thomas finished the season ranked 20th nationally in interceptions and 17th in passes defended. He finished the season with 41 tackles, including 32 solo takedowns. He added 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. He helped WKU finish the season ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency defense and 14th nationally in overall defense.
Four Hilltoppers saw their names on the magazine’s third team as junior Leon Allen (RB), junior Garrett Schwettman (PK) senior Willie McNeal (WR), and senior Cameron Clemmons (OT) all picked up the accolade.
Sophomore offensive tackle Forrest Lamp rounded out the Hilltoppers on the preseason team, appearing on the fourth team.
