BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With their inaugural season as Conference USA members approaching, six WKU Football players have been tabbed Preseason All-Conference USA selections by Athlon Sports, the publication announced Friday morning.

Leading the Hilltoppers’ representations on the First Team are senior offensive lineman Cameron Clemmons and senior defensive back Cam Thomas.
Clemmons has started 31 games for WKU and aided the Hilltopper offense in setting 18 program records during his junior season in 2013. A staple on the line since 2011, Clemmons has paved the way for three-straight 1,600-yard rushers and two of the top three individual passing seasons in program history.

Thomas led the Sun Belt Conference in passes defended (15) and interceptions with five as a junior, finishing 2013 ranked Top 20 nationally in both categories. His production was a significant factor in WKU ranking 10th nationally in passing efficiency defense and 14th ranked overall defense. The 2013 First Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection finished his junior campaign with 41 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.

The Preseason All-Conference USA honors are the second for Thomas and Clemmons this summer as the pair were both recognized as all-league performers by Phil Steele on June 3.

Junior running back Leon Allen and senior tight end Mitchell Henry were both named to Athlon Sports’ Third Team and were joined by defensive end Gavin Rocker and kicker Garrett Schwettman on the unit.

Allen rushed for 674 yards and scored eight total touchdowns in two seasons as WKU’s No. 2 running back and is expected to be the Hilltoppers’ top option in 2014. Henry led WKU’s tight ends with 25 catches and 305 yards while scoring two touchdowns in 2014. Both Allen and Henry were also recognized as Preseason All-Conference USA selections by Phil Steele on June 3.

Rocker, a redshirt junior defensive end, picks up Preseason Third Team honors from Athlon following a 2013 campaign that saw him register 27 tackles, including 5.5 for loss and two sacks. Rocker enters 2014 as WKU’s most experienced defensive lineman.

Schwettman’s Third Team nod from Athlon comes after connecting on 13-of-16 field goal attempts in 2013. The junior kicker made eight consecutive field goals at one point and delivered on 45 extra point attempts. His Preseason All-Conference USA selection is his second of the summer as Phil Steele also tabbed him as a Third Team specialist.
